Who is Kathy Lagoli?

I received an email today from someone who calls herself Kathy Lagoli. Her email address is kathylagoli@thingdiamond.com. The wording of the email is as follows:

Re: things i feel strongly about: women are heroes..
From:
Kathy Lagoli
View Contact
To:anengiyefa1@yahoo.com

Hello,

Would you be available to discuss this on the phone ?

kathy,
Innocently, I replied, as is the natural thing to do, even though I was somewhat surprised by the email. My reply:
From:
anengiyefa
Add to Contacts
To:Kathy Lagoli

Hello Kathy,

Of course. Can you give me a hint of what in particular the discussion will concern?

Regards

Anengiyefa
Then out of curiosity, I thought to google 'Kathy Lagoli' and the first item in my search was this post which I have set out in full below:

DO NOT OPEN ANY EMAIL FROM KATHY LAGOLI

Just wanted to let everyone know that today I received an email from someone named "Kathy Lagoli". The subject line contained an"re:" about one of my recent posts. The body of the email contained this message: "Would you be available to discuss this on the phone?" This comes after someone who has me on their contacts had their email account hacked into.
I didn't know what to think, so I didn't reply, then decided on a whim to google the name and came upon several sights that said they had received the exact same email, so it appears to be a scam of some sort....so DO NOT REPLY to any such emails.

Update: Just checking my traffic feed, there are TONS of people googling this name, so it would seem pretty widespread.

Thank heavens I did not divulge my telephone number, even though I am somewhat worried as to the possibility of some cyber criminal hacking into my email account through my reply.

I had the same thing this morning... also felt it was an innocent email as it had a heading of my blog in the subject heading, and I too innocently replied asking what it was about!....
Then I googled....wish I did this first!! And your post was the first one to come up. So since I've already sent an email to her... the damage done if any - I let her know that her/him in no uncertain terms to google her/himself to see that her/his jig is up!

I too recieved this email concerning my CHL and replied, but I did it over my phone for my email is synced tp it. Only thing I can think of is this person got my email from a gun forum. Hopefully this will not cause problems as if I would of replied by my laptop or PC. Whay's really going on?

Thanks. You just saved me a lot of trouble. :-) Very kind of you to take the time to put this notice on your blog. It came up #1 in google search.

Neat traffic bump to all blogging about this mysterious spam email. Got one in my email, immediately googled, still no clues. (at first I thought it was targeting blogger/blogspot.com & all things owned by Google (groups, youtube, picasa, etc.)but, no)

ugh i got her emails today . big suck. why oh why do scammers do this - and why does she want my phone #

linda2060 said...

I got this too! Then she sent me a message asking if I was still on business. She had emailed me on the topic of a book giveaway. I had to search it up, so thanks for letting others know. I could have sworn my email was spaced apart so there could have been no link.

Me too, thank you for posting this! Glad I googled before I replied.

joining the ranks of "Kathy Lagoli emailed me". Two emails today, last one more insistant than the first, but same wording as reported.First email was from @ifamilyassist.com, second from @thingdiamond.com. I fear it is going around the blogosphere...

Julie Leischner said...

Oh Lovely! Thanks for posting! I knew it seemed odd, but then really, after getting the second one asking "are you still in business", I thought..."well goodness, I can't lose business here by her thinking I won't reply!"

Wished I had googled her name earlier!

Next time....go with the gut!

I got an email from her today as well. It was about one of my domains and without even thinking I Googled her and I ended up here! :)

Thanks for the heads up. Here is the subject and the body of her email for the other Googlers who will follow :

Subject: Re: www.domain.com $0 usd domain name value @ domainvalues.com

OMGOD!!! I GOT THE SAME EMAIL!!!
I was shocked when I first saw the email regarding one of my illustration post on my blog, at first I thought a opportunity of some sort, then I saw her message, and I was like...who the hell is she?! Then I noticed the Reply on the title-> 'Re: run with fashion: my future outfit illustration' and thought....this is a scam...because I never talked to her...duh. So I googled her name and email, and yeah, found your blog with the post on this. Thank you for making this post! :)

Kathy Lagoli is just spamming everyone today. I got her email too, said the same exact things. "can we discuss.." and "are you still in business." I had no idea and replied to both but thankfully I had not given my number, I asked what she wanted to discuss first.
I actually googled her to see if I could find another way of contacting her because the second message said that she hadn't received my first email. Thank GOD this was the first site that came up, life saver!

Kawaii said...

I also received one.
I received it around 11:59pm..
That is my time here in the Philippines.

Strange though because I replied around 3am in my time:

"Yes, but may I know our concern?"

Then she messaged me again around 11am saying:

"Hi
I didn't hear a reply from you, are we still in Business?
Kathy"

Who is she?

I got the same thing saying if we could discuss my this with my cattery. I replied back and said yes. I am always willing to discuss cats. then i got another email asking if i was still in bussiness and i emailed back and told her yes my info is on my sight and left my number now I feel stupid

I've received 2 emails today, from the purported Kathy Lagoli. It only just occurred to me to Google this person, and now I am quite upset. The first email, received early this morning PST on April 6, 2011 had an eBay listing of mine cut and pasted into the subject line! The message said, "Are you willing to discuss this on the phone." Now I am VERY concerned that this person is perhaps on my list of Facebook "friends" and also knows my eBay info, not to mention my personal email address and now my cell phone number. Who do I call and what do I do? Her second email said, "Hey, are you still in business?" I replied with "???" and now I have deleted the message and 'spammed' it.

Yen said...

just got this email from her. glad i looked her up first. gee, thanks!

You can add one to the list. Two more addresses added to the spam filter. Didn't even know what she wanted.

I've also received two emails from that person, and thank god I've found this post.I wouldn't give my phone anyway and I live overseas, so who would want to pay a fortune anyway?

I got hit twice by this email. Thanks for the warning....

By the way, Kathy Lagoli uses more than one sending e-mail. This is not from a single person. It is a heavily organized effort by many. It's a business, folks.

Replied from 2 different laptops.

Beware of this slime ball

Here's a laugh. This spammer tried this scam in response to a fan story I posted years ago. Someone contacting me over the phone about that sounded suspicious already.

Thank you for your post. I added her to my blocked senders.

E-mails were from thingdiamond.com and ifamilyassist.com e-mail addresses.

Just got the same 2 emails - one from thingdiamond and one from ifamilyassist. It seemed fishy, but I replied without giving phone #, just asking if she was serious. I hope that will not cause a problem. Does anyone know what this is all about? If you email back, does it give you a virus???

Becky said...

Wow! I don't even know you, but googled Kathy Lagoli's name after getting a somewhat strange e-mail from her as well in regards to my photography business website. I would normally reply to such e-mails as they are generally from potential clients, but felt that hers was a little fishy. So I googled her name and ended up here. I'm glad I did as now i know I will not be responding! Thanks for posting this!

AfroGay said...

I deleted two e-mail from this person this morning - before I saw your posting - because it was not clear to me why she thought I would have anything of value to contribute to something I have never expressed knowledge about. Phew, I guess I was lucky, too.

I received an ameil from this person. It referred to a circle jerk report and it said she had not heard back from me and was I still in business. Jeez.

I wish I had known this yesterday. I, too, got the same email as everyone else. I did reply but I did not send my phone # or any personal info. This morning I had another email from this same 'person'. But this time I looked up the IP address. Seems it comes from some place in Sterling, Virginia. This time it was from a different email address. I so appreciate the info I've learned from everyone here!!! Thanks!

Thank you. It appears that Yahoo at least knows about this. I tried to reply to an email from this person and Yahoo did not send my reply because of "suspicious activity on my account".

Be aware she's changed her modus operandi. The email I received did not request my phone number, which would set off alarm bells for me personally. She implied that we had spoken previously and asked if I was still in business.

I didn't recognize her as a client obviously, but I wasn't about to just ignore the message.

Received a SPAM email from this person too, today at 4.36pm from email first name @ tebye.com

Haven't replied but was curious who she was so googled her and came upon this website.

Thanks for the heads up.

I had 2 emails from KathyLagoli@tedfleece.com Yesterday. The first aked if I would be willing to discuss this on the phone. So I emailed her back with my business phone number and told her to call me.As a wedding Minister I am more than willing to discuss my services on the phone. Later in the day I received another email saying that she was wondering if I was still in business since I hadn't replied to her previous email.

Anybody out there know what her game is??

I got 2 today where the subject was my single listing on eBay. It directs people to my business on etsy, so I didn't think it was weird at all when she said she hadn't heard from me and wondered if I was still in business. Until I got the second one and decided to Google it. So I'm changing my email passwords right now just in case and reporting them as spam.

I just recieved a few emails from her as well. I opened it because I thought she was asking me about my Zazzle shop and I replied. She didn't ask for my number, just if I was still in business, twice. I replied to the first email, then Googled her name. Then she sent me a third email to ask if I was still selling an iPhone. I don't sell those, but I do sell iPhone cases. Really weird stuff.

I also have a similar kind of story. I posted an ad on gumtree.com.au and got her email : Hello, Would you be available to discuss this on the phone ? kathy . I replied her back with my phone thinking it as genuine business talk. Again I received my email: Hello,

Hey didn't hear back from you, are you still in business ?

kathy

I am worried, what she wanna do with my phone number. If anyone gets any clue, please post it

Well, this was better than WHAT I THOUGHT was happening...she latched on to a web notice my girl scouts posted on a school website. Luckily our rule is always use an adult contact email (not the girls)so I got this KL message. I panicked thinking it was someone (a creepy guy) trying to contact one of my girls! I did reply that the girls would be very well supervised LOL!, now I have to hope it doesn't wreck havoc on my computer or credit!

I have different email addresses for different purposes. Folks: There is no "Kathy" or "she." It's a BOT (automated computer program) that srapes email addresses from a variety of sites (blogs, ebay ads, facebook business pages, etc.) and then sends a short message (and question) that it hopes sounds relevent enough for you to reply. If you reply, then it knows a human is reading emails sent to that address and you will start getting spam (Viagra ads etc.) sent to that email. Luckily those who google the name FIRST and discover this blog will know to "mark as spam" in your email program and never reply. It's that simple.

I got one as well yesterday. Worded exactly the same. I responded saying I don't give out interviews.

Today I got one asking if my iphone was still for sale? WTF?! I don't have an iphone!

That one I did not respond to. I knew it had to be a prelude to some scam.

I initially thought the name Lagoli was Italian, but now I know it's African, and as we all know Africa is a clearinghouse for every internet scam there is.

This is likely someone's test of email address harvesting technology, and just look at how effective it is. They don't even need you to reply, they just Google the name they're using and see how successful they are.
